Backrooms Recovery Walkthrough & Beginner Guide

Last checked: October 13, 2026. This unofficial guide sticks to what the developer's own description confirms, plus general strategy. We don't publish room-by-room routes, creature names or ending details until we can verify them, so you won't find guesses here.

What kind of game this is

Backrooms Recovery is a first-person escape and exploration game from Sleepless Games, the studio behind Sea of Sharks, Free Skate and Snow Riders. It runs in the browser on Poki, on desktop, phone and tablet, and Poki lists August 2026 as both its release date and its latest update. Around 68,000 players have rated it, and it holds a 4.4 score on Poki.

It isn't a shooter. You don't fight your way out. You search, remember and avoid trouble. If you've played other backrooms-style games, expect a slow, tense walk instead of nonstop action.

The story setup

Your character was looking into a mystery in a park and somehow slipped into the backrooms. That's the internet-famous idea of an endless, empty building with yellowed walls, buzzing fluorescent lights and rooms that never quite make sense. Your memories of what happened are broken into pieces and scattered through the halls. Finding them is how you find out what really happened. The game's own description says every memory brings you closer to the exit, then hints that an exit might not exist at all.

Your four jobs in every run

The official description boils the game down to four things. You'll do all four at the same time, all the way through.

  1. Search for clues. Rooms aren't just scenery. Clues and memory pieces can sit in corners, side rooms and dead ends, not only on the obvious path.
  2. Collect memories. Memories are your progress. Each one fills in more of the story and pushes you toward the way out.
  3. Manage scarce resources. The developer says resources are scarce. Treat everything you can pick up or use as limited, and don't burn through it early.
  4. Evade the entities. Something lurks in the shadows. Avoiding it is the intended answer, so stay out of its way instead of confronting it.

Step-by-step: your first run

1. Learn the controls in a quiet spot

Move with WASD on a keyboard, or with the on-screen joystick on a phone or tablet. When the game offers a choice, click or tap it. Spend your first minute walking around before you explore seriously, so you're not fighting the controls when something goes wrong. See the controls page.

2. Sweep each room before leaving

Make it a habit: enter, look around the whole room, check the corners, then leave. Skipping rooms is the most common reason players feel stuck. Usually the piece they need is behind them, not ahead.

3. Build a mental map

The halls are built to look the same, so pick landmarks. A broken or flickering light, an odd doorway or a room with a different layout will all help. Say them out loud if it helps ("left at the flickering light"). Whenever you find something important, note how you got there.

4. Read before you choose

Some moments ask you to make a choice with a click or tap. Don't click through on reflex. Read what's being offered, especially when your resources are low.

5. Keep your distance from danger

If something feels wrong ahead, slow down. Backing off and coming back later costs you a little time. Walking straight into an entity can cost you the run.

6. Follow the memories to the exit

Memories and the exit are linked. If you've stopped finding new pieces, you've probably skipped an area. Go back to the last landmark and check the rooms you rushed through.

Why players get stuck

Difficulty

Some YouTube gameplay videos are labeled "Normal mode", and one is titled "Normal & Hard". So the game may offer more than one difficulty. We haven't confirmed how the modes differ, so play your first run on the default setting.

What we're still verifying

We'll add these once we can confirm them from the game itself: the number of memories, named areas or levels, the types of creatures, specific items, and how the ending (or endings) work. Have a confirmed detail? Use the contact page.
